Trigger warnings: recovering bulimic I’ve very much enjoyed Ms. Quarles’ Stolen Moments series, so I was very excited to get a chance to read this one! While I’ve read the previous two books, I think it could work as a standalone. Conor is the exceedingly Irish ginger captain of the men’s hurling team, and Claire is the captain of the women’s camogie team (pretty much the same sport as hurling). Claire’s had a crush on Conor since she first saw him, but figured he had no interest in her. Unbeknownst to her, Conor’s also had a crush on her sinceRead the Post
Review: Earning It – Angela Quarles
Trigger warnings: child abuse (as part of a character’s back story) While this is the first book in the Stolen Moments series, I’m actually reading it second, after Risking It. This is a hilariously funny, but also deep, enemies-to-lovers romance. “The realization that our date is close to over washes through me and leaves behind a jittery, panicky residue. It’s the only reason I can explain my next words, ‘Let’s have sex.’” Pepper would describe herself as having a “no-nonsense, driven attitude” that can occasionally come off as coldness. In reality, she’s the kind of person who’d name a Madagascar hissingRead the Post
Review: The Last Wolf – Maria Vale
This is an odd duck to categorize. It’s got all the hallmarks of a romance novel (HEA ending, traditional romance plot arc, etc) but it’s also quite dark and raw. I think if you go into this expecting a regular paranormal romance, you’ll be disappointed. But, oh man, this book surprised me in such a good way. This is the gritty paranormal romance I never knew I wanted! In most of the paranormal/urban fantasies I’ve read, the shifters consider themselves both animal and human and generally try to fit in with human society, mostly out of necessity. In thisRead the Post
Review: Fire on the Ice – Tamsen Parker
Man, I was just so disappointed by this book. It’s the fourth book in the Snow & Ice Games series, each of which can be read as a stand-alone. I was particularly impressed by the second book, Seduction on the Slopes, which was m/m, so I guess I was hoping that the f/f book would also be great. Unfortunately, while I liked parts of it, there were also parts I didn’t care for. “I’m frustrated by my performance today. It’s not so much the losing. That happens and I wasn’t counting on a big win today. My best events areRead the Post
Review: On the Edge of Scandal – Tamsen Parker
Finally, the hockey romance! I’ve read a lot of hockey romances, but this is the first, I think, that had a female hockey player. This is the third in the Snow & Ice Games series, but each can be read as a standalone. Bronwyn is a college hockey player who’s made it on to the Olympics team for US women’s hockey, and Ash is the team coach. Though they’re at different colleges, women’s hockey is a small enough world that they are each familiar with each other, plus they’re both at colleges in the Boston area. When Bronwyn and herRead the Post
Review: The Wolf at the Door – Charlie Adhara
THIS BOOK, guys! This is, without a doubt, my favorite book I’ve read so far this year. It’s a wonderful mix of police procedural mixed with paranormal romance, and it sucked me in so much I stayed up reading way, way past my bedtime. In some ways, it reminded me of Eileen Wilks’ World of the Lupi books (one of my all-time favorite series). In Ms. Adhara’s world, werewolves have come out to the government, but are still a secret to the general public. In its endless quest to control everything – as the government does – the Bureau ofRead the Post
Review: HeartOn – Amy Jo Cousins
Remember how I said HeartShip, the first in the Full Hearts series, was sweet and lovely? Yeah, this is somehow even better. Can your read this book without reading the first? Yes, but, seriously, it’s not that long of a book, and it’s less than a dollar right now, just go read it! “I’m about to go meet a man I think about way more than is healthy. And he doesn’t even know who the fuck I am. Also, he’s straight. Also, I sleep with girls. Life is too short to deal with unnecessary drama.” Carlos knows the sting of disappointmentRead the Post
Review: A SEAL’s Honor – JM Stewart
Trigger warnings: This was a ton of fun! I was expecting this to be more of a “dating my friend’s little sister” trope, but other than some initial resistance and a few brother comments, this is more of a commitment-phobe romance. Since I love that particular trope, I was not disappointed! This is the third book in the Military Match series, but I read it as a standalone. “Confusion filled Mandy’s eyes. ‘So why use a dating service, then? What did you hope to get out of it?’ ‘Because I’m human. I get lonely, too, and a one-night stand justRead the Post
