Down the TBR Hole #1

Down the TBR hole

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a colossal Goodreads TBR list.  Every once in a while, I try wading in there to find something to read, but it’s pretty much an insurmountable task.  Enter… the Down the TBR Hole challenge from Lost in a Story.

Here’s the basics:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

The point is to do this weekly and eventually sort through your entire TBR.  Of course, considering that I’m starting off the year with 593 books, by the time I reach the end I’ll have to start all over again.

The Books

Stray cover
Stray – Rachel Vincent

Reviews are mixed on this one, but it was recommended to me because I like the Mercy Thompson and World of the Lupi books.  It’s the first in the series, also.

Verdict: KEEP

Kitty and the Midnight Hour cover

Kitty and the Midnight Hour – Carrie Vaughn

A werewolf who’s a radio host?  Really don’t need to think hard about this one!

Verdict: KEEP

Lumberjanes cover

Lumberjanes vol. 1

I really want to get back into reading comics, and this story about a bunch of kick-ass girls solving a magical mystery at summer camp seems like a load of fun.

Verdict: KEEP

Burning Bright cover

Burning Bright – Patricia Briggs

I’m slowly rereading my way through this series (I’ve been stuck on Dead Heat since, like, I dunno, August?).  This is several books further along in the series, so I don’t see the point of having it on my TBR list at this time.

Verdict: GO

It Ends With Us

It Ends With Us – Colleen Hoover

I think I added this to my list since it was a Goodreads Choice winner in 2016.  Looking at the reviews, a lot of people that I know have similar tastes to me rated this as mediocre.  Oh, crap, the one dude’s name is Ryle?   Yeah, OK, that makes my decision for me.

Verdict: GO

Truly Madly Guity

Truly Madly Guilty – Liane Moriarty

Another 2016 Goodreads Choice winner.  Meh, not that interested.

Verdict: GO

End of Watch

End of Watch – Stephen King

What’s that?  Yup, another Choice winner.  Plus, it’s the third in a series that I haven’t read a single book in.  Easy decision.

Verdict: GO

Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead

I actually have plans to read this for a challenge this year (the Oprah’s book club book from the Read Harder challenge), so yet another easy decision.

Verdict: KEEP

Rebel of the Sands

Rebel of the Sands – Alwyn Hamilton

Another 2016 Goodreads Choice, but this one is a YA romantic fantasy.  Totally up my alley!

Verdict: KEEP

All the Birds in the Sky

All the Birds in the Sky – Charlie Jane Anders

So, this is a Hugo-nominated scifi from one of Tor.com’s editors, I think.  Reading the synopsis, it sounds little weird, but hey, why not?

Verdict: KEEP

Summary

Total books sorted: 10

Books kept: 6 (60%)

Books tossed: 4 (40%)

So, a decent amount – mostly things I added just because they were 2016 Goodreads Choice winners – of books off the list.  Tune in next week, where we’ll find even more treasures and oddities!

Are you sorting through your TBR this year?  What do you think of my choices?
